I decided to carry on clearing the last of the weeds from the garden while Milly entertained herself chasing a ball around. My wheel barrow was piled high with goose grass, nettles and cow parsley, I knew the horses would appreciate them so I trundled over to the stables where one of the new liveries a youngish lady in tight purple and pink jodhpurs was scrubbing out some buckets, she was delighted with my barrow load of greenery and so it seemed were the horses. As I pushed my empty wheel barrow back across the driveway Johns red land rover pulled up. I waved and smiled as he got out, he reached over to the passenger seat and pulled out a plastic box filled with freshly baked scones, a big tub of clotted cream and a jar of strawberry jam.

“Rachel made so many scones this morning so she asked me to drop a load in for you. I wasn’t sure whether you had cream and jam so I nipped into Combestone and got you some.”

I grinned, “Wow thank you, that’s so kind. I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of Devon cream teas. Would you like a tea or coffee, I’m just going to put the kettle on?”

“I never say no to a cup of tea,” John laughed.

I carried two mugs of tea and a plate of chocolate biscuits out to the garden and placed them on the table, John had sat down and removed his baseball cap which had a picture of a tractor embroidered on the front.

“The garden is starting to look a lot better,” John said helping himself to a biscuit, “Maria was a keen gardener in her day.”

“I’m planning on planting bulbs and bee friendly flowers; I love lavender so I’m going to plant lots over in that sunny corner. I think it will look amazing this time next year,” I explained.

John nodded, “It’ll look a picture I’m sure. Your grandmother would be very pleased that you’ve inherited her green fingers.”

I laughed, “I’m still pretty clueless when it comes to gardening. I’ve never really had the chance to do it before, there was a communal garden at my flat in Surrey but none of us really bothered with it much.”

“Well you’ve got plenty of room to grow flowers as well as fruit and vegetables if you wanted to.”

“Yes I’m hoping to grow some veg next year when I’m a bit more organised.”

“It sounds like you’re pretty much settled here now.”

I smiled, “Yes, I think I am. This place has a lovely peaceful feel to it, I think I’ve found my forever home.”

“Larkworthy is a cracking place, I’m so glad you’ve decided to stay.”

“Did you know my mother when she lived here as a child?” I asked casually.

“Yes Ginny and I grew up together, we went to the same school, both members of the young farmers club. Living on neighbouring farms it was inevitable that we would be friends. The three of us were very close.”

“The three
